What is Noun (संज्ञा)..?

Noun is the name or Noun is the naming word. संज्ञा से तात्पर्य किसी भी नाम से बोध होना है |Noun is the name of a person, place, thing, animal and our feelings. As- Alok, Gopalgnj, Computer, Milk, Tiger, Happiness, Honesty.

It has Five kinds-

  1. Proper Noun –   व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा
  2. Common Noun – जातिवाचक संज्ञा
  3. Collective Noun – समूहवाचक संज्ञा  
  4. Material Noun – द्रव्यवाचक संज्ञा  
  5. Abstract Noun – भाववाचक संज्ञा

1. Proper Noun :-

       The name of a particular person, place, thing and particular animal is called proper
noun.As- Alok, Reeta, The Ganga, The Geeta, Himalay, Taj Mahal, Tommy, Pushy.

2.  Common Noun :-

        The name of common thing is called common noun. Therefore the name of caste,
class and kind is called common noun.  As- Publisher, Teacher, Doctor, Man, Woman,
Dog, Cat, Table, Chair.

  3.  Collective Noun :-

          A group of noun is called collective noun, therefore the name of a collection is known as collective
          noun. As- Army, Bazar, Market, Family, Audience, Classroom, School, College, Meeting, Seminar.

  4.  Material Noun :-

           The name of goods, things, or materials, which we can weight or measure that will known as
           material noun. As- Rice, L.P.G. Gas, Milk, Gold, Wheat, Oil, Water.

5.  Abstract Noun :-

         The name of feelings thoughts, ideas, experience which we can only feel that will be
known as abstract noun. It cannot be touched and seen. As- Happiness, Sympathy,
Sorowness, Honesty.

IN MODERN ENGLISH NOUN HAS FOLLOWING KINDS

(1)  Proper Noun (2) Countable Noun (3) Uncountable Noun

(1) Proper Noun :-      

          The name of a particular person, place, thing and particular animal is called proper
          noun. As- Alok, Reeta, The Ganga, The Geeta, Himalay, Taj Mahal, Tommy, Pushy.

(2) Countable Noun :-

          The noun which we can count that will be called countable noun therefore the
          common and collective noun which we can count that is called countable noun. It
has two kinds –

(i) Singular countable noun       (ii) Plural Countable Noun

(i)  Singular Countable Noun :-

                      The noun which is only one in the number is called singular countable noun.
As- Man,Woman, Dog, Cat, wife, knife, thief, city, story, fool, tooth.

             (ii)  Plural Countable Noun :-

                      The noun which we is more than one in the number is called plural countable countable noun.
As- Men,Women, Dogs, Cats, wives, knives, thieves, cities, stories, feet, teeth.    

(3)  Uncountable Noun :-

                The noun which we cannot count is called uncountable noun. Therefore material and abstract both cannot be counted
so jointly these are called- uncountable noun. As- Rice, milk, Gold, L.P.G. Gas, Honesty, Poverty.

SOME OTHER KINDS OF NOUN

(i)  Concrete Noun      (पदार्थ वाचक संज्ञा)

                (ii) Compound Noun   (संयुक्त वाचक संज्ञा)  

(i)  Concrete Noun :-

                The Noun which we can touch and see is called concrete noun. All the names of thing, materials,  
               collections, living and nonliving thing is called concrete noun. As- Rice,Gold, Water.

                It has also four kinds – (a) Proper noun (b) Common noun (c) Collective noun (d) Material noun.

(ii)  Compound Noun :-

                The group of words which is used as noun is called compound noun. As- Washer-man,
               Goldsmith, Brother-in-law, Father-in-law, Sister-in-law.
